I remember for my very first theatre audition I sang "Tomorrow".

It was for The Wizard of Oz, & I was 9.

I had no idea what was really going on.. I was just told to pick a song to sing, & then that I'd be dancing... and so I was like, "Okay!"

No nerves or anything... I miss those audition days. haha.

I ended up making the musical too. hahaha. I was a munchkin... the only part in the play that will ever have a need for young children.

Sorry, that had nothing to do with overused songs... Just reminded me of my past. rofl.

Haha! QFT! Really, what's the point in doing a song if you're going to bugger the best part?

30. Gimmie Gimmie from Thoroughly Modern Millie
Jenem

Funny how the last couple of auditions I went to, I heard MANY of these listed songs being sung.

Sometimes they are even sung in the wrong key; sometimes an octave above what's written...whatever suits the day, right?

Unfortunately I'm beginning to see that in community theatre it doesn't matter what the heck you sing, the people who make poor choices all get called back and cast anyway. Meanwhile, you try and choose something appropriate yet rare and people say "Hmm, interesting choice".

I'm convinced that these amateur directors prefer to hear songs they know, becuase what they do know is sadly, few and far between.

Community theatre sucks. So go ahead and sing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star"— no one is listening anyway. Mad

Sorry, I'm still annoyed. I'll get over it eventually.... Cool

End rant.
The Drama Queen

31. Do Re Mi- Sound of Music
32. Favorite Things- Sound of Music
33. So Long, Farewell - Sound of Music

I swear some little kid (or even older one) has done one of these songs for every single audition I have ever been too my entire life.
Sweeney Hyde

^^Basically everything in Sound of Music is overdone because every singal person in the world has seen that rutty film! Watch some new musicals People!

34. Matchmaker, Matchmaker from Fiddler on the Roof
brown_eyed_actress

35. I Enjoy Being a Girl - Flower Drum Song
36. Honey Bun - South Pacific
37. Look at Me, I'm Sandra Dee - Grease
38. Music of the Night - Phantom of the Opera
itsaboutonemoment

39. I'm Not Afraid - Songs for a New World

Don't get me wrong, I love the song (duh, look at my screenname!), but so many people use it, and it's just become very over done, on top of which you really shouldn't bring Jason Robert Brown into an audition, he is very difficult to sight read and play. And to continue on that note...

40. Stars and the Moon - Songs for a New World

Again, I love it, I love the whole show, but there's no good cutting of this song for an audition, and I don't like it when someone who's 20 tries to sing this song. Life experience, people!!! Smile

41. title song from Phantom of the Opera
42. On My Own from Les Miserables
43. Anthem from Chess
44. Maybe This Time from Cabaret
45. Green Finch and Linnet Bird from Sweeney Todd [at Sondheim show auditions this seems to be what every girls sings. At nonSondheim shows, not so much.]

I'm really sad about 'don't tell mama' being overdone... I love that song. And maybe it's because I'm out of the loop, but I never hear Yeston's Phantom done. Neutral

46. Stars from Les Miserables

I agree, I'm the Y&K Phantom right now and I've never heard any of the songs at auditions. I actually think they are good songs to sing at auditions because they are beautiful and yet no one seems to know about them.

Haha!! I feel ya on that one!!
Sort of on the same note though, do your research on who you're auditioning for, as in, the theater. If you are a familiar face there, you've been to almost every audition this theater has had in the last few years, you know what kind of stuff people sing ... it's your choice whether you want to sing a song on someone else's "no-no" list, or sing some brilliant unknown song that will get the above reaction. Go ahead and sing "If I Loved You" if you sound great doing it and you've never heard anyone else do it at your small community theater. But, obviously be more cautious when you are in a situation like a high school audition for Beauty and the Beast or High School Musical.
Just use JUDGMENT.

59. Reflection from the movie Mulan (can't remember if someone already said this one)

On community theater...

call me a ho but very often I'm auditioning for directors who know less about musical theater than I do. So chances are I could go ahead and sing "In My Life" and bring the director to tears while he cries, "Brava! Brava! Where did you find that marvelous song?!?!?!"

no.. it's everywhere.
The Drama Queen

It's probably just my location, but some of these songs I have never seen used for auditions. I think each region has its own favorites (like in mine, the only truly over-done songs are Over the Rainbow, Do Re Mi, and sometimes In My Own Little Corner).

Me too! Some these songs, I'm like "Who does that song?"
Impossible Dream

The ones I included were all ones that friends have told me are very overdone at professional auditions. In turn, I hadn't thought some of those down the list - eg. In My Own Little Corner were that overdone. (It's a naff song anyway)

76. Dance Ten Looks Three - A Chorus Line
Sweeney Hyde

In My Own Little Corner is on the list about three times. Everyone after the original post of it (it's on page 1) please edit your post with a different song. Thank You.

Salome

odd..I wouldnt consider I Hate Men overdone. So In Love,Too Darn Hot and Always True to You..yes.
jazzygirlsings

There are a few in there I would disagree with as well, but I think that people also have to keep in mind that these might be songs that are overdone on the East Coast or West Coast or Middle America...

What is overdone in one place may not be overdone in others...
Salome

lets not forget

79. Fair Moon to thee i sing- HMS Pinafore.

80. Poor Wandrin One- Pirates of P{enzance

81. Madern Major General- Pitrates of Penzance

82. The Moon- Mikado
jazzygirlsings

^For musical theatre auditions or for G&S auds?
Salome

both. alot of G&S cross over to musical theatre auditions as you know.
jazzygirlsings

I wouldn't agree with all of them for musical theatre auditions, but I would agree with all of them for G&S auditions...

I know a lot of them are cross-overs...I've noticed that for the most part, it's usually done by the people who aren't very good actors and think that their vocal range will get them the job...
Salome

yes but i heat Moon and I..major general and Poor Wnadrin One as much as i hear On My Own, Danced all Night or This is the Momewnt at auditions. ugh.
jazzygirlsings

^Wow...I can't understand a darn thing you just typed! LOL!

And do you mean "The Sun Whose Rays..."? (Not "The Moon and I")

I'm tired...perhaps I'm reading it wrong on your end or something...

sorry..i was typing and working on a claim lol

yes sun whose rays..ugh. i mean ive heard all of them as often as the above songs.

Wow this is missing an obvious one....

Take Me Or Leave Me (I believe it's called,) from Rent?

Any song from Rent. I had the misfortune to have to sing One Song Glory because I was sick, and always sound good when I sing low. (And it was a last minute turn around thing.) Otherwise if my voice hadn't been all cracky in my regular range I would've done my other song. (which would've been from Disneys Alice In Wonderland) One other person sang it (One Song Glory) and didn't know the words...
Anyway...they let me do another audition and my voice was STILL cracky, and so I did a song that I hadn't seen done at all- Over The Moon. Maybe not the best choice, but hey, I did the stage version. Cool They liked it. And it was for a community theater.
But otherwise, Take Me.... was done 2 -3 times. Whew. But all the songs I were considering were done by someone else. That's why I did Over The Moon....and I'll stop blabbing now. Embarassed
