"Sweeney Todd" questions that you'd like to ask So

Dear Sweeney Todd Fans,

Which "Sweeney Todd" questions would you like to be able to ask Sondheim?

SPOILER WARNING!

I'd like to ask Sondheim the following questions:

"Are Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett lovers, under ANY conditions?"

"Is Mrs. Lovett seducing Toby, under ANY conditions?"

"Is Mrs. Lovett's former meat supplier an ANY way suspicious of Lovett's sudden success?"

"Is Lucy supposed to have been smart all along, or is she only made wise because of the circumstances under which she suffered?"

"Does Anthony really LOVE Johanna, or is he just lusting after her, and using Sweeney Todd to get to Johanna?"

"Is the doll really as symbolic as she seems to be?"

"Is Sweeney really turned off by the song 'By the Sea,' or is he just so obsessed with revenge that he doesn't seem to care about the song?"

"Why does EVERYONE, proper and lower-class, pronounce the name 'Johanna' in the same way by which they would pronounce the name 'Joanna'?"

"Is Toby supposed to have a mental challenge or a learning disability, or is he just supposed to be young? Is he supposed to be both young AND mentally challenged at the same time?"

"How did you originally envision the delivery of Sweeney's discovery of the Beggar Woman's identity?"

Thanks in advance for your replies.

lol, I didn't really notice either, until a few weeks ago.

I think it's because it's the UK pronunciation.

Mrs. Lovett planning to kill Toby?

Dear Sweeney Todd Fans,

SPOILER ALERT!

Wikipedia claims that during Mrs. Lovett's verses of "Not While I'm Around," she's actually planning to kill Toby? EEK!

I know that Wikipedia's info. is oftentimes false, but is that true? I'd want to ask Sondheim about THAT fer shurr!

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Duchess, I think most of these questions deals with issues designed to be open for interpretation.

Like Dvarg said, it's open for interpretation--at that point Toby knows too much and for Lovett if its Toby or Todd she'll stick with Todd.
This is a woman who encourages Todd, sells ppl-pies, and locks and innocent young boy in her bakehouse--it doesnt take a far stretch of the imagination to think that'd she'd be able to kill Toby too--but is it a hard decision? that would probably be a better acting choice but it depends on the interpretation

I always believed so, that's why it gives me chills. Lovett has realized that Toby is too dangerous to keep alive, so she's coming up with a plan to get rid of him as she sings.

I thought that you were kidding!

Dear SweeneyLovett,

I thought that you were kidding, until I heard Johanna (Joanna) say Anthony's name as "Antony" on one of the many Sweeney Todd videos which are on YouTube.

Johanna really does call Anthony "Antony".

Thanks in advance for your reply.

Not Dead Yet

Haha, yeah. I'm trying to decide whether to do my Johanna with an accent or without for this competition my friend and I are doing. If I choose with accent I get to say Antony which I find quite amusing.
