"Show Off" question

How long does Janet hold the note at the end...before the encore?
And how does one hold that note for that long?
jazzygirlsings

They do a trick with her microphone because there's a moment in that note when she drinks a glass of water as she's "singing!" LOL!
EsmeraldaDaae

Huh?Was that on the Tony's?
christinadaae

1 breathe!
2 some people can acutally sing while they drink

that's all
Ingénue

1. listen to the music and count. lol I have no idea
2. yes- breathe- breath support.. and the water glass thing *shrug* my mind is too simple to grasp it. LOL jk jk
EsmeraldaDaae

How can a person sing while they drink?Scientificly?
Monsieur D'Arque

It's a trick glass. She's not actually drinking- that trick was also performed in some productions of Chicago during "Both reached for the gun."

yah i saw the show and the sound sort of changed while she was singing with the glass. perhaps they have her taped? maybe my ears are just whack. whatever she did tho, props to her Applause

She is a traind singer. She has the abilty to hold a note that long.

The water drinking part is recorded. Only that part.
christinadaae

no, the drinking is really her singing
it is not taped

It is taped. Mad She told Seth Rudetsky (SIRIUS radio) that at his Studio A Cabaret.
christinadaae

Wow! Surprised I didn't know that people can do that! Also, my name is Kristina ,too!
But I can imagin some people trying to do that. Laughing

Okay, I know this is old, but I want to know: how do you sing and drink at the same time? I'm not trying to make you sound ridiculous or anything, but I really want to know. Could you explain exactly what happens? Because right now it doesn't make sense to me . . .

I'm pretty sure it's a recorded voice...

She's not really drinking. It's most definitely a trick glass. Very few shows have people actually drinking.

Unfortunately, I was in a show once with a little kid that didn't know that. He filled his prop coffee cup when I thought it was empty, then performed the handoff without telling me. Since he had found the cup laying around in the wings, I didn't put my mouth to it and ended up with water all down my front. Thank god it was at a rehearsal.

I saw the show at the Ahmanson (pre-Broadway) and it I'm 99% sure it was recorded. That certainly doesn't make it any less funny!
AllThatJazz777

Ah, just to clear things up: I'm also about 99% sure that it's recorded when Sutton sings it, but that person was claiming that it was possible to drink and sing at the same time, and I wanted to know how that's possible. But thanks for trying to clear it up for me, anyway. Smile

I'm sure for live shows, with untrained ventriolquists, they use a tape.
However, the trained ventriolquists can actually do it, they use it to "proove" that its actually the dummy talking and not them.

They learn to swallow with the lower part (or upper part, I forget) of their throat, and with the other part they do the talking. Also, they hold liquid in their throat, and swallow much of it when they break.
Biancaisconfused

I've done it on awkward vowel and gutteral noises..

just basically pouring the water into your mouth.. and not swallowing.. until after you finish.

granted... that won't get you more than maybe a 10 second UUUUHHHHGGGHGHHGHGHGHGHGH.. but it still amused me....

hahah.
