"By the Sea" in the revivalI downloaded a few tracks from the revival of Sweeney, one of which was "By the Sea". (Boy, was I disappointed). Anyways, does anyone know why those extra lines were added at the beginning of "By the Sea" after "Do you really want to know", and before "By the sea...". I really don't like her delivery of those lines... or how she does the song.
I was really excited because I had plans to see this on my summer trip to NYC, but I'm not too sure anymore. Are any of the songs on the new recording worth downloading? Is this even worth seeing?
By the way, does anyone know if there is an audio recording of Sweeney in Concery with Patti and Hearn? I know there's a DVD, but I'm looking to see if there's a CD. Even a bootleg...

Yeah the revival is kinda disapointing. The only person who is really amazing is Toby...so I say get all the songs he sings in. He's REALLY amazing though, so I say see the show even if just for him.

Mark Jacoby was wonderful as Turpin. and Il oved Johanna and alot of what Cerveris did.
Toby was okay. not the best role in the hsow anyway but Ken Jennings owns the role.

You LIKED what cerveris did? He grumbled through the part, there was no real energy.

He reminded me of Rex Harrison in My Fair Lady. I actually really liked Manoel Felciano as Toby. I haven't heard Marc Jacoby (I'll have to dl "Johanna"). I also really hated the Anthony.

songs to get:
kiss me. the orhcestrations are amazing, and Johanna's vibrance are AMAZING in this version!
The Tooby stuff is good.
You could downlaod the contest. If you're used to eharing the original, then this one is, umm, certainly, original!
I don't like the whole "lack of chours" thing. But the orchestrations are good minimal. However, sometimes, you are just waiting for it to burst out into a huge ensemble with crashing drums!!!!!!!!

well if he reminded you of Rex he must be perfection.. Rex in MFL was one of the only perfect performances in 20th century theatre.
but anyway..cerveris wasnt like Sir Rex...if he was he'd have been miscast. Rex though one of the most versatile actors in the world wouldnt have been the right type for Sweeney.
I liked laot of what cerveris did..not everything..he was too laid back in Epiphany and during ittle priest he lacked Hearn and Gunton's humor.
I didnt really care for the setting of the show over all though..and I missed the large ensemble.
overall Cerveris was better in this than he was in Assassins.

I liked Cerveris a lot, he's now one of my favorites, but Len Cariou's Sweeney will probably always be dearest to my heart. I do like Lauren Molina's Johanna a lot- being a teenage girl myself, I know what they tend to sound like and she actually sounded like she's only 16. (I know she isn't, guys.) As I've stated in the misc. forum, I think she'd make an excellent Buttercup in a Princess Bride show.

I love Cerveris, personally, though not more than I love Cariou or Hearn. I do like LuPone better than Lansbury, though. *is stoned to death*
As for her "By the Sea," I think it depends on what you're expecting the song to be. You all want just a photocopy of the original, but the revival isn't. It's taking the material and making something new and different. Stop living in the past. The revival is a seperate entity from the original, and we can like them both for their qualities without comparing them.

That's not entirely true. I'm not looking for an Angie photocopy because (obviously) Patti LuPone isn't Angela Lansbury. Her singing if fine... I just don't like how she delivers the lines. She does them all soft and dreamy and then sings loudly and slightly belty. Y'know? And I don't know what the word for this is, but the sort things in British people's speech (i.e. "Me toes", etc.) don't really fit because she doesn't use an accent.

Her delivery takes getting used to. Angie's completely over the top and almost vaudvillian in delivery, but Patti's a slyer, sexier, quiet evil. She's okay, overall.
I ADORE Manoel Felciano, though Ken Jennings is the Toby to be judged by. manoel does have a fine voice, though, and is a wonderful actor.
Lauren Molina is my favorite Johanna. The opera diva Johanna that has become the custom seems a bit much- she's a scared sixteen year old girl, and the coloratura craziness seems out of the Johanna element of youth, terror, and purity, in my opinion.
Cerveris is overall pretty good as Sweeney, and certainly not a let down. True, more energy would have been helpful in many numbers, but he, like Patti, is that more restrained evil. Mark Jacoby is also an impressive Turpin.
I just really hate Anthony. He's creepy in this version, not dreamily romantic. And his singing is all wrong.
This verson is more subdued, but it's kind of refreshing in comparison to the often CRAZY dramatic portrayals on the movie (coughBetsyJoslynthoughawonderfulsingerisabsolutelySPASTICandoftenGeorgeHearnseemsabittooangryanddoesntshowenoughofSweenystendernesscough).

I REALLY liked the revival. Of course, I had only listened to the Original once. The dissapointments are there, like the Ballad at the beginning which didn't have the orchestral power, and 'By the Sea' which is my least favorite song on the revival, it doesn't have the energy it needs. I love all the other songs however, and i reccomend buying the album. And I hope to go see it.

I just downloaded the rest of the CD (with the exception of the Anthony's Johanna and Ah Miss). I must retract my statements about Patti. I really love her in "My Friends". Oh, and Cerveris... love him too. I do agree that the ballads don't have enough power. They seem to have more of a quirky sound. I can't wait to see this when I go to New York this summer!
