*CHARACTER ADVICE: FRED

im auditioning soon for the role of Fred in OUAM at my high school.... im usually more confident with my acting than with my singing, but with this role im nurvous about the character.... i dont think shes ditsy or airhead-ish, is she just nuts?? help please!!

Thanks!

Fred is the most unprincess-like person you could meet. Bold, strong, funny, a tomboy, and most definately not a ditz, airhead or nuts.

Talk to Pappycat for indepth detail.

Pappy? Where you at, yo?

I had physical unusualness going for me (I'm fat and have big, puffy, curly hair) which was in stark contrast to the girl they wanted for Larken (Slender, with long, wavy hair.)

I also have a very brassy and untrained voice. It was very rough and comedic. Some directors wouldn't go for this, but mine really liked it. (I actually got better as the show went on, and she was like "No, bring it back to rougher voice!")

I think Fred is a very earnest and confident. I think she is aware of the fact that she is unusual and unprincesslike, but doesn't care. I think you have to play her bordering on obnoxious, but not so much that she annoys the audience. It's a fine line. They have to root for her.

This is my favorite musical, and my alltime favorite role to play so feel free to ask any questions. Smile

Thanks!! I just fineshed Seussical-- i was gertrude-- and i sortof compared the two characters (mostly vocally).... should i be singing with a fony voice or should i make it sound pretty (esp. in Shy)???
PappyCat

I never tried to make myself sound pretty (unless it was for comedic effect, in small bits of the song.) But that was a choice, made by myself and the director.
